Cost Estimates of Dropping Out of High School in Canada

July 2009

Hello %%First name%%,

A report, commissioned by the Canadian Council on Learning presents the tanglible costs associated with students who do not complete their high school studies. It has long been accepted that non-completion of a high-school diploma can have negative consequences for the individual, however this study has been able to take it "one step further" and identify the significant economic costs resulting from non-completion.

Costs of Assistance - Crime - Health - Labour and Employment

Here are some of the interesting findings in this report:

  • The average public cost of providing assistance to a high-school drop out is more than $4,000 per year.
  • The annual cost to the criminal justice system is estimated at more than $220 per high school drop out.
  • There is a strong link between high-school completion and an individual's long-term health - and an estimated increased cost to the high-school drop out of more than $8,000 per year.
  • High-school drop outs have significantly lower income earning power and potential.
